AZZURRI Kelburne are Subway national league hockey champions for the fifth consecutive year, but they made heavy weather of disposing of Inverleith 3-2 at Peffermill on Saturday.
The Paisley outfit took the lead in only 30 seconds when a Kenny Bain volley was well stopped by the Inverleith goal-keeper, but Jonny Christie deflected the rebound from Gordon McIntyre into the roof of the net.
Persistent Inverleith failed to lie down, however, and equalised with a powerful low shot at a penalty corner. Kelburne continued to do most of the running and Michael Christie hit the bar with a fierce volley, but Inverleith shocked the champions with a second set-piece conversion that gave them the lead.
Bain had a good chance seconds later, but his fierce effort went wide of the target. But Josh Cairns quickly brought Kelburne back to level terms with a penalty corner shot that flew into the roof of the net.
Some degree of panic then set in and both Michael Christie and Bain found themselves in the sin bin. Ironically this seemed to inject some urgency into the Paisley side and, with four minutes remaining, Christie made amends by scoring the winner following a goalmouth scramble.
