SINGING sensation Kirsty MacLaren has won this year's Search for a Star competition.
The 17-year-old from Barrhead wowed judges with her rendition of Mariah Carey's Hero.

Kirsty told The Extra: "I was very surprised to win as all the performances were brilliant".

The teenager admitted: "It was scary before I went on, but once up there I just forgot about everything.

"Winning this has boosted my confidence. It was just a really fun, exciting night and I'm looking forward to using my time at the studio".

Recording time at Riverside studio apart, the former pupil of the Dance school of Scotland, at Knightswood secondary, also won £250 to spend at The Avenue, a DVD of the night and a slot to perform live on community radio station Pulse FM.

Next for winner Kirsty is a three-year BA degree course in musical theatre, starting later this month at Glasgow's Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Clyde One's Gina McKie, Keiran Gillespie of Collusion theatre and The Extra's Louise Brown were faced with the task of deciding the winner.

The broadcaster admitted: "It was very difficult to decide who to choose.

"They all brought something different to the show which made it even harder".

The ten finalists put their all into the event, which saw them sing live on stage in a contest run by and held at The Avenue shopping centre in conjunction with Mearns community week.

During the break, dancers from Margaret Gilbride school of dance wowed the audience with two energetic performances.

Kirsti Spence, director of the show, said: "The talent this year could easily have rivalled any of TV's top shows.

"Our show gives people a chance to feel like a star for a night while providing a platform to showcase their talent to a large audience.

"I hope we'll be working with Mearns community week again next year to bring another fantastic event to local people, and maybe next tim it could be your turn to shine".
