HOW far does the average soldier march in a year? Perhaps 500 miles? Quite possibly even, 500 more.
The pair at the centre of Sunshine on Leith, the stage show transferring to Glasgow this week, won't have quite that far to go home at the end of each performance.

The story of two boys' return to their Edinburgh home is based on songs by the Reid twins, Craig and Charlie — better known as The Proclaimers.

Performed at the King's Theatre Sunshine on Leith deals with everyday matters like falling in love, family tension and adultery.

Westender Judith Williams plays Margaret — an ex-girlfriend of the main character Rab.

She told Live!: "It's been good to come back a year later and play the same character.

"Family and friends who came last year and have seen us this year say the show is stronger and tighter.

"That's because everybody began knowing it was a product that worked so there was a solid base to go from.

"The Proclaimers' songs definitely lend to great storytelling."

Written by Stephen Greenhorn — creator of TV drama River City — Sunshine on Leith will be performed by members of Dundee Rep's Ensemble with a live nine-piece band under the direction of James Brining.

Judith said: "Stephen is a great bloke. He wasn't terribly involved this year in rehearsals because he knew it was up and running.

"It's the first Scottish musical — an idea that had never really been thought about before.

"Like everybody else I knew songs like 500 Miles and Letter From America but beyond that I hadn't really heard any of their other music.

"They are brilliant writers and the more we've worked with the music the more our respect for them has grown."

Judith adds that comedy and drama are delivered superbly in this Edinburgh tale.

She said: "The show is just all about family values. One of my friends said after watching it she just wanted to go and phone her mum.

"The best bits are set pieces from Misery to Happiness and Let's Get Married. It's got great music, great performers and is a great night out."

* SUNSHINE on Leith opens next Tuesday at the King's Theatre and runs until Saturday, February 21 at 7.30pm (2.30pm on Saturdays). Tickets from £11 at www.ambassadortickets.com/glasgow or via 0870 060 6648.
