WITH such a mish-mash of genre labels pinned on them, these four musicians can't really seem to decide what they are.
Le Reno Amps has previously had its music branded as "indie, some say power pop, some say alt-country", so it really is open to interpretation.
The group consists of friends lead vocalist and guitarist Al Nero, and Scott Maple (vocals and guitar), who, after some line up changes, recruited bassist Lindsey Scott and drummer Jason Sinclair.
The members moved south to Glasgow to play the gig circuit and the band has existed in its current form since 2006, playing everywhere from Aberdeen to Plymouth.
Second album Tear it Open was completed last year and launched last week with Drift records.
The group worked with acclaimed producer Andy Miller, who has worked with the likes of Mogwai and Sons and Daughters and the finished product is packed with "taut melodies, close harmonies and sharp sardonic lyrics".
Paisley-based vocalist and guitarist Al Nero told Scene: "It marks the beginning of a new chapter in Le Reno Amps story. Songs like You Do Your Thing, Threads and Going Under all deal with the ins and outs of estranged relationships — like all great pop songs do".
He added: "After 2007's downbeat but critically praised album, So For Your Thrills…, this manages to reconfigure our musical landscape".
Le Reno Amps has been described as "the Swiss Army knife of music" although this is a band, unlike many skinny-jeaned, cardigan-wearing lost boys on the indie scene, which does have a clear sense of its own identity.
As for the unusual name, Al admits: "Le Reno Amp is nothing more than an anagram of Maple and Nero, so don't question the name too much".
With plans for the near future, the musicians have a BBC session on the Vic Galloway show scheduled for April 6, and are appearing in King Tut's on April 19.
